8/23/07: Infuriating would be an understatement. All of the China Recalls have been sickening. I sit here wondering, when does it end? How many more recalls are left? How many more companies are sitting on their hands, biting their fingers, waiting for affirmation that their products are tainted too? How many of you have turned over toy after toy to be shockingly suprised just how many of your items are from China? I certainly have. And just in case you are wondering the picture you see above is a picture of one of the many toys we’ve had on the recalled lists.
It is just yet another reminder to me that quality is better than quanitity. I have been sitting on the fence for about a year now in regards to our toys. We have an innumerable sea of toys in our house and overflowing our garage. Ridiculous amounts of toys. We are the toy masters. Don’t get me wrong we haven’t spent oodles of money on toys. We are just garage sale fanatics. We find it hard to pass up a good deal. I also provide childcare, or did (tomorrow is my last day), so we’ve felt it fairly necessary to have all the toys. Beginning about last year after reading a couple books on child development I came to the conclusion that less is better. Children’s imaginations (and your pocketbooks) thrive when they have less. They do better with higher quality, open ended, limited toys.
So I kept telling myself that is what I wanted for my kids but it has been so easy to put off. Well, we’ll just slowly start buying the good toys and then we’ll sell off all these, I would think. But it still hasn’t happened.
Well, it starts next week. These recalls have me sick. But above the recall it is just a general reminder that I need to buy local and that I need to limit our purchases and get rid of the plastic junk in general. So, I will be starting this process next week since I will no longer be babysitting and will have more time on my hands. Please wish us luck. This is not going to be an easy undertaking for me. I’m not sure what we will do for toys but we’ll get by. At this point she can play with cereal boxes for all I care (unless it’s made in China). I am also throwing out all of our children’s jewelry. I will be sure to take before and after pics. I welcome anyone else to join me on this mission. View the updated playroom HERE.
And if you happen to have missed them here are some of the toy recalls (be prepared to puke). Please message me if I’ve missed any of them here:

Doesn’t this outrage you? Make you sick?
“…All of the China Recalls have been sickening. I sit here wondering, when does it end?…” I seriously doubt it will happen in our life time.
“It is just yet another reminder to me that quality is better than quanitity.”
So true. My wife and I have always tried to get our daughter educational toys that don’t have a lot of bells and whistles but are solid, good quality toys… They still creep into the stash from birthday parties, well-meaning grandparents, and toy exchange.
I was completely shocked by some of the items on the list, Thomas the train and the Einstein color blocks!
This weekend the toy purge begins…

I failed to say that the Charger was from China and the batteries from Japan…both Energizer. Need them for the camera.
We have been trying to rid our house of imports from China. This morning our battery charger stopped working. Energizer Charger, Energizer AA Batteries? I did a search and can not locate an American substitution. The pet food recall was the warning bell for me. But it is difficult to see how much stuff I have that I don’t even stop to consider. I will keep looking or stop using battery operated things…I hope!
Consumers need to learn more about the International Standards and Certification programs that exist. Had Mattel required their suppliers to be Certified to a standard called QC 080000 IECQ HSPM (Hazardous Substance Process Management) This would not have happened without knowledge and/or notification. Consumers worldwide need to demand that all suppliers of consumer products have an international certification for Hazardous Substance Process Management. The IECQ QC 080000 IECQ HSPM Specification for HSPM is the only international system available and more than 550 companies have already undergone certification. Many of them in China and Taiwan. http://www.iecq.org is the place to learn how to achieve such a certification.
I found your blog while replacing my son’s small fortune worth of Chinese-made toys. I have also purged our home of those items, which has left him in mourning over his Thomas trains. We are now just waiting for his new Whittle set to arrive.
It is amazing that I can replace so many of his toys with USA products even cheaper than the Chinese versions. However, I’m hoping this movement will spawn a little more creativity from the wooden toy producers. I’ve noticed the block selection is amazing (see http://www.unclegoose.com/BlocksABC.html). I’ve never seen blocks so ornate.
But the other selection is a bit dull. Whittle has nice trains (www.woodenblocks.com).
I’m trying to replace our supply of bath toys and having a tough time. Any recommendations?
thanks for this list, I didn’t know there was somewhere you could subscribe to for updates (ie the cpsc) so that was very helpful info. It’s worrying & infuriating, there’s new toys added each day to the list!
Thanks for a great resource! I’ll be linking to this from my blog!
It is pretty sad huh? You should look into R.I.E. by Magda Gerber. It is a philosophy of dealing with children, from infancy up, in which all the conventional toys we are used to (including swings, rocking chairs, etc) are not used. Homemade toys are much better – all of them without lights, sounds, flashing, etc.
